About

These instructions will help you prepare a female audio jack, which you can use to hack the other toys. This is how the toy will actually connect to the switch (which will have a male audio plug).

While it may seem odd that an audio jack is required to adapt a toy, 3.5mm audio jacks are a standard way of interfacing with switches in the Assistive Technology (AT) field.

If you do not want to use these, you can buy female audio jacks pre-made. However, making your own will save you some money.

This How to Solder a Wire to a Female Jack video (from The Ohio State University Toy Adaptation Program) is also helpful, but does not use heat shrink. We recommend using heat shrink around every joint that you solder.
